EASEE-gas, Cefic and IFIEC Europe jointly asked the Commission to discuss cyber security at the Madrid Forum of 19-20 October
(BRUSSELS, 17 October 2017) EASEE-gas, the European Association for the Streamlining of Energy Exchange – gas, Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council and IFIEC Europe, the International Federation of Industrial Energy Consumers, jointly asked the Commission to discuss cyber security at the Madrid Forum of 19-20 October.
Further to the last Madrid Forum of October 2016, EASEE-gas, Cefic and IFIEC Europe expected that cyber security would be put on the agenda of this year’s Forum but this point is not on the agenda of the Madrid Forum of 19-20 October 2017.
As energy has become more and more dependent on electronic information, it has also become a focus for hackers. The internationalisation of the energy market led to the emergence of European platforms, centralised systems and the involvement of many parties increases the need to work together to raise the overall security level. The three associations believe in the necessity to create awareness around cyber security and its risks for the gas market with a focus on protecting critical infrastructure and the vast amount of data stored in centralised platforms, in particular related to REMIT.
EASEE-gas, Cefic and IFIEC Europe therefore asked the European Commission today to allow some time for a discussion on cyber security at the Madrid Forum of 19-20 October.
